I was actually disgusted with myself that I didn’t get a good enough photo as it was a beautiful sight to behold. But hey, I had a fractured leg, which I think is an acceptable excuse! Actually, the more I look at it, it’s not too bad, and besides, I think it has a decent enough story to go with it!</image:title>

<image:title>My Story - Long Story Short</image:title>
<image:caption>First of all, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for checking out my site. Let me explain to you how the name Factor Forty came about… One sunny August morning I woke up and all of a sudden, I was Forty! Wtf? I mean, where did my thirties go? And come to think of it, where did the best part of my twenties go? Exploring new places, experiencing new cultures, and meeting people from all over the world has always been a passion of mine but it was never something I was in the position to take advantage of. I spent years saying "someday I will travel to..." because travelling was always something other people did, and I intended to do “someday”. Until one day I finally woke up with a slap on the face from the big F and said "let's make someday today"! So here I am. A childless Singleton with braces (that's another story) on the first rung of the forties ladder, coming to terms with her midlife crisis and embracing the old age of youth. Forty. Does it mean it’s time to sit back, “settle down”, and watch life pass me by? Or is it time to ramp things up to the next level, take a deep breath, a leap in the dark, and hit the ground running with the wind at my back, and the sun in my face? For me it’s the latter, life begins… (with vigor) So hence the name - Factor Forty! Now, I have already heard some disapproving tut tuts quite early into my journey, and one thing I have learned to do, is to shrug it off! Let that be a lesson to anyone who is too afraid to start something new or follow your dream for fear of disapproval or criticism from peers - shrug it off! There are no set rules, so don’t let another persons concept of life dictate how you should live yours. (Apologies for inadvertently sounding like a motivational quote, but… you get what I mean). And besides, once you’ve hit the big 4-Oh, you’ve just about run out of Fs to give! *shrug So join me on my travels, and let’s make that someday today. Let’s go…</image:caption>

<image:title>My Story - That photo always makes me smile - one of the many fun nights we had out and about in Malta in the early 00’s. And look how skinny I was! Not many calories in Jack Daniel’s I guess…</image:title>
<image:caption>So where does an Irish girl abroad go to to find a job? The Irish pubs of course! Three weeks in, and I started my new job at O'Casey's Irish Pub right in the heart of the tourist area, Paceville. Looking back, I can easily say that that first year in Malta was the greatest year of my life. I soon met who would become one of my closest friends (how we met is probably one of the funniest stories from my travels that involves The Hilton, some sailors, and a chicken kebab but I would have to change my name and go into witness protection if I told the story, but maybe one day I will spill the beans, with her permission of course), and we moved into our new apartment in St. George’s Bay. The rent was high, the wages were low, did we care? No. We were having the time of our lives, me and my two crazy Canadian best friends. We didn’t have much, but what we had, we shared, and It’s beyond my comprehension now how 3 people can make a meal out of one egg and a packet of Koka noodles, but at least we didn’t go hungry!</image:caption>

<image:title>My Story - Some of the gang at O’Casey’s Irish Pub in Paceville - those were the days!</image:title>
<image:caption>Some amazing times were had, and some life long friends were made at this place. The staff - Elaine, Sarah, Antoine, Beppe, Ania, Agata, Larissa, Bruno, Nik, Nathan, Rory, Lainey, Stacey, Faye, Chantelle, Claudette, Frans the security man, our beloved Dave & Julie, and of course all the regulars - Ian, Kris, Manny, Johnny, Kristy, Stephanie, Luke, Gelmar, Nikolai, Claude, Mikeala, Philip, Rodney, Claire, the University gang, and everyone else I forgot to mention, thank you for 6 fantastic years at this little gem of a place :)</image:caption>

<image:title>Scrapbook - Snap Happy</image:title>
<image:caption>I am by no means a professional photographer but I think I have a good eye for photos, and try to follow the basic rules of photography - rule of thirds, leading lines, and on many occasions I have found myself in a public area perhaps lying on my belly trying to take a close up of something like a bug on a cobbled street! Although it’s amazing how something as simple as changing your viewpoint can dramatically change the mood of your image. Yes, I am that person, I’ll have my travel buddy shining their phone’s flashlight on a daisy while I dangle by my ankles from a cliff with one hand blocking out the sun trying to find the best position to take the shot. Camera Sutra! And I’ve received many the eye roll for it! So pop the kettle on and take some timeout to join me in some of my travels through pictures. They’re not all perfect shots, but they are some fond memories I would like to share. In no particular order…</image:caption>

<image:title>Scrapbook - Alicante City Centre, Spain</image:title>
<image:caption>I travel to Alicante every year, even if it’s just for a short weekend break to enjoy the beaches, the food, and the beautiful weather, so I have passed by this sculpture in the marina many many times. Only last year I decided to stop and take some photos and actually ask Google the name of this sculpture so I wouldn’t look like a complete cultural idiot when I posted the photo on Instagram. Turns out it’s called “The Return of Icarus with his Wing Surf”, and it’s not just a statue of some random naked guy with a surf board. Oops!</image:caption>

<image:title>Scrapbook - Marsaxlokk, Malta</image:title>
<image:caption>Out of all the hundreds of photos that I took in Malta over the years, this is one of my favourites. It was taken in the small fishing village of Marsaxlokk in the south of the island. If you want to see the old traditional side of Malta, this is one of the places to visit. The Sunday morning market offers everything from fresh seafood and fish to traditional Maltese eats (you’ve got to try the Pastizzi), handmade lace and gifts. Take a closer look at that sign on the wall - “Too much sex will kill you ok”</image:caption>

<image:title>Scrapbook - Comino, Malta</image:title>
<image:caption>Comino is a tiny little island in between Malta and Gozo, it’s only around 3.5 km sq and a population of 3, yes 3, that’s not a typo! However on any given day in summer the little island paradise can see up to a couple of hundred visitors who go to swim in The Blue Lagoon, take in the breathtaking views, and chill out on the sun beds. You can take a day trip by boat from Malta or Gozo, there are numerous return trips up until late afternoon but it’s probably best to head out early to claim your spot, those sunbeds fill up fast!</image:caption>

<image:title>Scrapbook - Comino, Malta</image:title>
<image:caption>That’s me hiding behind a pineapple looking all pink and unfiltered, and a bit tipsy if my memory serves. You see, those ‘Pina Colada in a pineapple’ are rather tasty, and you have to drink them quickly before they go all warm in the sun, then you have to buy another because you’re thirsty (that’s my excuse and I’m sticking to it..) They do in fact serve an array of beverages and snacks at the little kiosks. Funny facts about Comino: The island was a popular hideout for pirates and smugglers during the middle ages, and much later in the early 19th century it was used as a place of isolation for plague and cholera victims! It has such an interesting and colourful history for such a tiny island.</image:caption>

<image:title>Scrapbook - New Orleans, Louisiana</image:title>
<image:caption>Nothing like cruising down the Mississippi on a Steamboat on a sunny afternoon with a bloody good Bloody Mary in hand… and my goodness is she spicy!!!! Believe me, as I write this, I’m seriously craving what is undoubtedly the best Bloody Mary in the world! As you’ve probably gathered by now reader, I’m obsessed with New Orleans, and everything about the place, so if you’re looking for recommendations on your trip there, I’m your woman! You can take a Steamboat Natchez Harbour cruise or an evening Natchez Jazz Dinner cruise, and it’s a perfect way to sit back and relax and soak up all the sights, tastes, and sounds of the Crescent City in proper 19th century style. It truly is a unique experience.</image:caption>

<image:title>Scrapbook - Bourbon Street, New Orleans</image:title>
<image:caption>Not a very flattering photo, I know… but when you’ve accidentally dyed your tongue and innards blue, it’s a story worth telling! And let this be a lesson to anyone not to order more than one of the very blue ‘Resurrection’ cocktails in Spirits of Bourbon Street, although it is served in a cool skull cup with a flashy light at the bottom so it’s hard to say no! Anyway, I had 3, which resulted in a major sugar overdose that had me twitching for hours, a blue tongue that lasted for 3 days that wouldn’t go away even with multiple teeth and tongue brushings, and worse than all that….. *TMI moment so please don’t read on if you’re squeamy or easily offended by bodily functions* yes worse than that - blue poop. And that’s all I shall say on that matter.</image:caption>

<image:title>Scrapbook - New Orleans, Louisiana</image:title>
<image:caption>I like my hot sauces, and I love the flavours and heat of traditional NOLA cuisine, and if you’re like me, you’ll be delighted to see quite a few sauce bars dotted around the city, all offering FREE SAMPLES of sauces so you can choose your poison before you purchase. Basically, you can go around like a hot sauce buffet and dip your crackers or chips into the samples for a taste. No problem, I can handle my hot sauces! The first few I tried which had delightfully humorous names like Bayou Butt Burner, and The Beast, among others were fine, hot, but fine, so I got cocky! The next one I just had to try was called ‘One Fuckin Drop at a Time Hot Sauce’, so like the others, I dipped my cracker right into the sauce and shoved the whole damn thing into my gob. It was fine, at first, and then… SWEET MOTHER OF HOLY DIVINE CHRIST! The tears started to roll down my cheeks, my whole life flashed before my eyes, and I had to have a little sit down while my mouth paralysis subsided and my vision returned! Lesson learned - DON’T GET COCKY IN A SAUCE BAR!</image:caption>

<image:title>Scrapbook - Honey Island Swamps, Louisiana</image:title>
<image:caption>So you might think that a trip to New Orleans is all about Bourbon Street and Jazz music, wrong! Swamps, swamps, and more swamps! No trip is complete without a trip to Honey Island which is about an hour’s drive from the city. Take a tour. I’ve been twice with Cajun Encounter Tours and I highly recommend them. You’ll see alligators, raccoons, snakes, turtles, maybe bald eagles if you’re lucky, and wild boars like in the photo, can you see them? They blend into their surroundings quite well. Oh and we got to feed them hotdogs - not something you get to do everyday!</image:caption>

<image:title>Scrapbook - The Dark Hedges, Antrim, N. Ireland</image:title>
<image:caption>Hands up if you’re a Game of Thrones fan and recognise these trees! *My hand is slightly raised above my shoulder as I was an extra in GOT season 1 but that’s as much as I watched, so I’ve a bit to catch up on. Anyway, The Dark Hedges in Stranocum doubled as The Road to Kings Landing, and is one of many GOT filming locations dotted around Antrim. We were glamping just up the road at Thornfield Farm so we took a trip at 6am one morning to get some decent photos minus the tourists in the background. It truly is like something out of a fairytale.</image:caption>

<image:title>Haunted New Orleans - The Museum of Death is located on Dauphine Street in the French Quarter, and if you’re like me - the more gore the better, then the $15 entry fee will be an absolute bargain.</image:title>
<image:caption>It’s a self guided tour so you can take as long as you like, and I must admit, I probably spent way too long on the serial killer letters and artwork and the evidence bag containing hair from the OJ Simpson trial. Other gruesome oddities you can peruse include exhibits on terrorism, cannibalism and embalming, actual shrunken heads, graphic autopsy videos, a coffin, body bags, one of Dr. Kevorkian’s suicide machines and a video of it in action (which actually made me feel ill), Manson family photos, animal corpses in formaldehyde, graphic crime scene photos, and of course a big jar of human teeth! I could go on…</image:caption>

<image:title>Haunted New Orleans - Yes that’s me posing in front of Nicolas Cage’s future resting place. No, he hasn’t passed on yet, but his ego persuaded him to buy a plot in St Louis Cemetery, and erect a sizable pyramid which is as big and as ostentatious as his ego. It’s very much an eye sore as it stands 9 feet above ground and in obvious contrast to the other modest tombs in the cemetery. The Latin phrase on the tomb translates as “Everything from One”. Do you think he took his role in National Treasure too seriously? I think so…</image:title>
<image:caption>Apologies for the blurry photo, I had to jump in for a pic very quickly without the rest of the tour group seeing me. With their obvious disgust for this monstrosity, I would’ve been shunned from the rest of the tour!</image:caption>

<image:title>Destinations - New Orleans - Maison Dupuy on Toulousse Street in The French Quarter is my recommendation if you are looking for a hotel that’s bang smack in the middle of the action yet far enough away from Bourbon Street that you’re not disturbed by the noise. The Hotel is a quaint oldy worldy style New Orleansian Hotel. Cosy, homely, spotlessly clean, amazing staff, swimming pool & courtyard, and a bar/restaurant that serves an amazing breakfast. It’s a little pricey compared to some other French Quarter Hotels, but if you’re willing to pay a little extra for comfort and location, this is the place to stay.</image:title>
